'Clothing Optional' Providence, Rhode Island

I recently took a train trip to Providence, RI to attend the opening reception of Clothing Optional: A Figurative Show at ArtProv Gallery. I was very happy to have my work included in the show which featured paintings and sculptures by a small group of figurative artists, including friend and Long Island City studio mate, Jeff Schneider. The event was well attended and was also part of Providence Gallery Night which brought in many art lovers as part of a tour.

I had a fine time meeting interesting people, talking art, visiting the Providence Art Club and the Providence Mural Crew at AS220 and enjoying the surroundings of this charming city in the heat and sun of summer.

Manifestation #4

One of a series of four, Manifestation is a result of fast gestural movements capturing the energy of the figure, without feeling the need to depict the figure in too much detail. More at Saatchi Art.

Small Abstracts

These small abstract are from my imagination with no reference or preconceived ideas. The resulting images I regard as snapshots out of the corner of my eye. Everyday urban scenes that I am exposed to somehow pour out in interesting ways onto the white of the paper.

Gesture and Texture

I'm loving these new oil paintings on Arches Huile paper. I like to capture the gesture of the human figure. Not necessarily dramatic poses or dance moves but subtle, relaxed movements that leave room for the viewer's imagination.

A Trip to the Auction Houses

I enjoy visiting exhibitions at the auction houses in New York or London, my home town. You never quite know what to expect and it's fun to walk in and be surprised at Sotheby's, Christies, Bonhams or Phillips, and to see the estimated bidding prices. Last week was very exciting here in New York with day and evening auctions of Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary Art. I visited Bonhams and Sotheby's. My favorite piece of the day was a small sculpture by Rodin named Nu feminin agenouille en torsion at Bonhams. So beautiful from every angle. Sotheby's had a number of exciting examples of Contemporary Art. I'd quite happily hang a number of them in my apartment but they are a bit out of my price range! Here are a few picks from my grand day out.

Deliberate Action

Working mostly from my imagination, my new work is gestural in it's depiction of the human form. I am not focused on detail or realism, rather I strive to capture the sensuous nature of the shapes along with movement, gesture and expression. Texture evoking muscle, bone and sinew finds its way into my work with the fast action of the brush. It's an exciting process enlivened with the mystery of not knowing quite what will emerge - and a healthy dose of music during the action!
